Holy Week

To God’s Beloved At Cloverdale Baptist Church:

We are now in a time of reflection on the worst and greatest week in history…and it rightly should take our breath away and drive us to our knees.

There are many good tools that can walk you through this week, and I would suggest that we all take extra time to remind ourselves of what Jesus was doing on each of these days and the significance of this to our salvation and sanctification…

Palm Sunday:

  • Meaning: Commemorates Jesus' triumphal entry into Jerusalem.
  • Importance: Fulfillment of prophecy and the beginning of the end of Jesus' earthly ministry.
  • Bible Verses: Matthew 21:1-11,  Mark 11:1-11,  Luke 19:28-44,  John 12:12-19.

Monday of Holy Week:

  • Meaning: Jesus' cleansing of the Temple.
  • Importance: Emphasizes the purity and sanctity of God's house.
  • Bible Verses: Matthew 21:12-17,  Mark 11:15-19,  Luke 19:45-48.

Tuesday of Holy Week:

  • Meaning: Teaching and parables, including the Olivet Discourse.
  • Importance: Jesus' preparation of His disciples for what is to come.
  • Bible Verses: Matthew 21:23-26:5,  Mark 11:20-13:37,  Luke 20:1-21:36.

Wednesday of Holy Week (Spy Wednesday):

  • Meaning: Judas' agreement to betray Jesus.
  • Importance: The turning point towards Jesus' arrest.
  • Bible Verses: Matthew 26:14-16,  Mark 14:10-11,  Luke 22:1-6.

Maundy Thursday:

  • Meaning: Last Supper, washing of disciples' feet, institution of the Lord's Supper.
  • Importance: Establishes the sacrament of communion.
  • Bible Verses: Matthew 26:17-30,  Mark 14:12-26,  Luke 22:7-39,  John 13:1-17:26.

Good Friday:

  • Meaning: Crucifixion and death of Jesus.
  • Importance: Atonement for sins through Jesus' sacrifice.
  • Bible Verses: Matthew 27:1-61,  Mark 15:1-47,  Luke 23:1-56,  John 18:28-19:42.

Holy Saturday (Black Saturday):

  • Meaning: Jesus' body in the tomb.
  • Importance: A day of reflection and waiting.
  • Bible Verses: Matthew 27:62-66.

Resurrection Sunday:

  • Meaning: Resurrection of Jesus.
  • Importance: Victory over sin and death, the foundation of the Christian faith.
  • Bible Verses: Matthew 28:1-10,  Mark 16:1-8,  Luke 24:1-12,  John 20:1-18.

These days hold deep significance for Christians worldwide, reflecting on the events leading to the crucifixion and celebrating the resurrection, which is the core of the Christian faith.

May our God deepen our experience of His love this week so that it impacts us next week and beyond!

Looking forward to Good Friday with you, and then the darkness being broken by the Resurrection celebration on Sunday!

This is a wonderful week, where we all should take the entire week to prepare for Sunday, and the rest of our lives!

Worshipping in grief and joy,

Pastor Rob

Text:  1 Corinthians 15:1-11

Title:   Salvation Has Come:  Worthy Of Celebration

What do you do to make the Holy Week Special?

What memories do you have about this week that have helped you focus on Jesus and all that He has done for you?

Share what makes Good Friday the worst day in history…

  • Share what makes it the best…when tied to Resurrection Sunday…

Read 1 Corinthians 15:1-11

If you were to say something was the most important thing, or of first importance, what would that be for you?

How does that show in how you spend your time, treasures, and talents?

React to John Stott’s quote, “The Cross is the blazing fire at which the flame of our love for God is kindled, but we have to get near enough for its sparks to fall on us”

  • Have you felt your love enflamed for God this week?
    • o How can we get close enough to the cross that we experience His love in a more rich and full way?

How does having a correct view of sin deepen our experience of the love of God?

Why do you think Paul says, “in accordance with the Scriptures” in 1 Corinthians 15?

How can we be those who are impacted by grace?

  • Titus 2:11-14

What are some ways in the coming months that you can show that this Gospel is of first importance to you?

What are some ways you can show this in your use of your time, treasures and talents?

Who does God want to use you to encourage, or reach out to during this time of reflection on the richness of the Gospel?

Prayer:

  • Praise and Thank God for the gift of salvation…
  • Pray that we would make this Gospel of first importance in our lives and that it would show…
  • Pray that those who came on Sunday invited by friends would hear from God, experience God’s love through us, and join us in faith and mission.

Pray for our search committee in their pursuit of a Discipleship/care pastor.
