Hope for the Island 2019

CBC Summer Missions Trip 2019 (http://www.hopefortheisland.org)

Who is Hope for the Island (HFTI)?

Hope for the Island is based on Siargao Island in the Philippines. As one of the smallest and easternmost islands; it is one of the poorest.

Hope for the Island has a variety of ministries, all with the objective of sharing the gospel with the community:

  • Children – early learning centre and weekly children’s programs.
  • Youth activities.
  • Reaching the community through mercy ministries such as distributing food or clothing and treatment of medical conditions eg, burns.

Hope for the Island is headed by Derek Van Ryckeghem and employs local staff who run the day to day ministries.

Purpose of the trip?

Provide those at CBC an opportunity to see what missions is all about. This is an introduction to a variety of ministries necessary to meet the needs in a developing country. The team would participate in the existing ministries of HFTI governed by the make-up and giftings of our team (age, abilities, experience and giftings).

Team composition and size

Steve Klassen will lead the team along with his wife Cindy. Three other family members will also be on the trip.

Derek Van Ryckeghem and his two children will also travel with the CBC group and provide leadership during the transit stages. Excluding the above, the maximum team size will be 8. As this is an exploratory trip, the trip is most suitable for older youth (16 years and above) or young adults. Individual maturity is as important as actual age for such a trip. Additional adult supervision is not expected to be required.

Timing and Duration of Trip

The trip would be for approximately 2 weeks including travel time. The trip is expected to be from 9 August to 26 August 2019 but travel details will determine exact dates. Travel involves a flight to Manila, and then a local flight to Siargao Island.

Cost of the trip and funding model

Including airfares of about $2,000 each, the total cost of the trip would be about $2,500. Each individual is expected to do personal fundraising to raise a minimum of $500 towards the trip.
